Feel Neil: A Documentary About The Neil Diamond Phenomena
"Enter the weird world of Neil Diamond impersonators and tribute bands and meet the women that travel the country to get their Diamond fix." Summary Plotline by soundeziner@earthlink.net
From the Webmaster:
Shortly after the turn of the millenium, this webmaster stumbled upon some information on the internet about an upcoming independent film - documentary project that would focus on the Neil Diamond phenomena. The phenomena includes not only the Neil Diamond impersonators and tribute bands who spend many of their waking hours trying to recreate the man and his music, but the super fans (mostly women) who not only attend every Neil Diamond concert they possibly can (some have chalked up over 300 shows and have traveled thousands of miles for concerts overseas). These "Diamondheads", as some call them, spend an inordinate amount of time thinking of, talking about and looking up information about all things Neil Diamond. These are the people who populate the chatrooms on the internet which are devoted entirely to "Neil related topics".
At the time, I was (and still am) not only Tom Sadge's webmaster but also his manager, agent, costume designer, bookkeeper, backer, PR person, number one fan and, of course, wife (of over 30 years). I wasted no time looking for information about how Tom Sadge could get involved in this exciting project!
It wasn't long before I was communicating with David Sarich of Mad Dash Films - an independent film company based in Atlanta, Georgia. (MadDashFilms.com, as of the writing of this page, is no longer on the internet.) At the time, the only impersonator David was was aware of and had been in contact with was Jay White of Las Vegas / Henderson NV. Jay was, at the time, the best known of the Neils because he'd been performing as Neil Diamond on the Imperial Palace stage in Las Vegas with the Legends in Concert show for a number of years (1989 - 1998). (Jay later financed his own show, now closed, at The Riviera Casino in Las Vegas). David had also heard about the San Francisco-based Super Diamond, fronted by Randy Cordeiro (aka: Surreal Neil), and some other Neil Diamond tribute bands and was in the planning stages of filming SuperDiamond in concert at The House of Blues, where they frequently performed.
I told David that, in addition to Jay White and Randy Cordeiro there were at least four other notable Neil Diamond impersonators, or tribute artists: Rob Garrett (Las Vegas), Rick Pierce (Las Vegas), Barrie Cunningham and, of course, Tom Sadge. (I called Rick and Barrie to gie them a heads up). I also told David that there were a number of devoted, long-time Neil Diamond fans who would be interesting to interview. David asked me if Tom and I could help put him in touch with the Neil Diamond ladies, which I had Tom do, and to supply the contact information for the other impersonators, which I was happy to research and give to David. The more the merrier!
Here is the official description of David's resultant film:
| Feel Neil (2003) is David Sarich's first feature length film for Mad Dash Films. David spent 1 years traveling the U.S. chronicling the lives of Neil Diamond Impersonators and Tribute Bands, and the fans who follow them. The film, shot on mini-DV, follows 4 Impersonators and 3 Tribute Bands and their devotion to the Jewish Elvis: Neil Diamond. |
The film turned out, I think, quite well. The impersonators and Neil Diamond tribute bands were interviewed and taped at work and behind the scenes, making for some very interesting footage. Not only are the impersonators and bands interesting, but you will be amused by the devotion of the longtime Neil Diamond fans who also have their favorite bands and impersonators to whom they are devoted.
Feel Neil was filmed on location in Atlanta, Las Vegas, Pigeon Forge, San Francisco, and other places. impersonators and Neil Diamond tribute bands were interviewed and taped at work and behind the scenes.
Tom Sadge, who is both a Neil Diamond fan and a Neil Diamond impersonator, is one of the Neil Diamond impersonators who was both featured and interviewed.
Because the MADDASHFILMS.com web site is no longer in service, and we have gotten requests on how fans can order this film, we are trying to once again contact David Sarich. So far we have not been successful. If you know David, please tell him to contact us.
