Besides the obvious answer - that both are male singers - what else do these two singing icons have in common?
Well, both are singers who made it big in the mid-sixties. Both reside, or have resided, near Los Angeles. Both have longtime devoted fans. But Engelbert Humperdinck and Neil Diamond have something else in common - Tom Sadge.
"I've been singing the songs of Neil Diamond - like Neil Diamond - since he made it big with Solitary Man in the mid-sixties. I was about 11 at the time. Later on I began to appreciate the music of Engelbert. I also got to know him when I began impersonating Neil Diamond when I opened for Enge in Canada. It was a few years later that I decided to add a Humperdinck impersonation."
Sadge, who is based near Scranton PA, has traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada entertaining "as Neil Diamond" since 1997. The tribute has been successful from the beginning. He's considered a favorite of many of the "Diamondheads". The Pennsylvania native has also gotten to know a few of Engelbert's most devoted fans throughout the years, but he's never entertained them as Enge.
Most of the fans from both stars know every word of every song by heart, so Tom Sadge has to be on his toes.
"If I sing the wrong words to a song, or make an un-Neil-like gesture or step, you can bet I'll hear about it later! But the critiques are well-meant, and have helped me tremendously in polishing my impersonation."
Neil Diamond tours infrequently, which places Sadge's services in greater demand. Many of the ladies need a "Neil fix" inbetween tours.
The recently announced Neil Diamond U.S. tour has fans frantically waiting for word about when tickets will go on sale and which cities will be honored with the Solitary Man's Traveling Salvation Show.
Engelbert is a few years older than Neil but this hasn't slowed him down: he is a regular in Atlantic City and Las Vegas.
